Friday With Firkan #1
It’s the last Friday of March, and I’m starting something new here. Again.
I’m a serial starter of things. I start a lot of new projects, sometimes many at the same time, and rarely finish any of them. Some might say I have issues focusing on one thing at a time, and for a long time I’ve believed that about myself.
Recently though, I’ve started to learn why I do what I do and why I don’t do what I don’t.
You have a story to tell. It is likely that that story is made up of parts you aren’t proud of, and parts you’re crazy happy for. And am sure there are parts that others have defined for you. It’s these definitions that I’m learning to break out of.
“Know thyself”, the wisdom goes. It’s quite a journey, and it is hard to find out what we truly like and love and what we don’t. But if there’s one thing that the journey helps establish, it’s our true real self that’s hidden below layers of stories about us that others have told about us.
Through the eyes of a self-explorer, what looked like a series of incomplete or failed projects, now look like an artist’s tests and experiments to find himself. Gone is the self that looked down on itself for never finishing, and gone is the negative self talk with it.
I’m looking at things that are complete and trying to think why I completed them. Art projects from when I was little, computer programs from when I was a teenager, songs from when I was a young adult – all of them are under the microscope. And as I look through it, I cannot conceal my many smiles at each completed piece of work. Each of them had my attention and love, because I cared about them.
I’m starting something new here. This is the Friday With Firkan newsletter that I’ll be sending out to you each week, and posting here on the blog too. I’ll share blurbs about life, music and the journey of creating art.
I don’t think this is a project that can be ever be “completed”. And I’m happy that I now trust myself enough to start something like this.
Thank you for being here.
